Writing Task 2

Change

Some people prefer to spend their lives doing the same things and avoiding change. Others, however, think that change is always a good thing.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

The concept of change has always been a topic of debate, with some preferring a predictable and stable lifestyle while others advocate for change. In my opinion, embracing change is crucial for both physical and mental well-being, despite the reluctance of some individuals to take risks.

Opponents of change argue that it can be detrimental to an individual’s life, particularly when they are content with their current situation. For instance, a person with a stable job, a happy family life, and a healthy lifestyle might resist change if they are presented with a new opportunity that would require them to give up their personal life and alter their healthy habits. Such abrupt changes can be harmful, physically and mentally, and is a justifiable reason to be resisted.

However, I believe that change should be welcomed. It allows individuals to break free from old habits and opens up new opportunities for personal and professional growth. In terms of personal life, change can be beneficial for someone who is in an abusive relationship or living in a broken home. Moving to a new city or country and starting afresh can therefore improve their mental health and overall well-being. Professionally, individuals who take risks, switch to another career path, and embark on an entrepreneurial endeavour are more likely to see different outcomes, thus improving their quality of life and their chance of success.

In conclusion, although some individuals are risk-averse and prefer a stable lifestyle, embracing change can have significant benefits for both personal and professional development. Ultimately, it is crucial to weigh the risks and rewards of any decision related to change.

“For instance, a person with a stable job, a happy family life, and a healthy lifestyle might resist change if they are presented with a new opportunity that would require them to give up their personal life and alter their healthy habits.”

Here I used the conditional “if they are presented” to express a hypothetical scenario. This structure is useful for expressing a possible outcome or consequence of a condition that may or may not be true.
