Writing Task 1

TASK 1 (MAPS): SUPERMARKET SITES

The map below is of the town of Garlsdon. A new supermarket (S) is planned for the town. The map shows two possible sites for the supermarket.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Sample Answer

The map illustrates two potential locations, labelled S1 and S2, for the construction of a supermarket in the town of Garlsdon, which has a population of 65,000. Overall, the two sites differ primarily in their proximity to residential areas, ease of access, and suitability for residents from neighbouring towns.

Overall, while S1 offers better road access for out-of-town customers, S2 provides greater convenience for the majority of Garlsdon’s population and has stronger transport links via rail to surrounding towns.

Looking first at Site 1, it is situated on the north-western edge of the town, surrounded by countryside. Its position close to the railway line and a main road would make it convenient for people commuting from Hindon, a smaller town with a population of 10,000 located 12 kilometres away. However, being on the outskirts means this site is less accessible for a large proportion of Garlsdon’s residents, particularly those without private transport.

By contrast, Site 2 lies in the town centre, within the no-traffic zone. This location places it in close proximity to the main industrial zone and is surrounded by residential areas to the north and south, making it easily reachable for most local residents, particularly those travelling on foot. Furthermore, the central site is well connected to the railway, which links Garlsdon with Bransdon, 16 kilometres to the south-west with a population of 15,000, and Cransdon, a larger town of 29,000 residents situated 25 kilometres to the south-east. The only drawback of Site 2 is the restriction on car access due to the pedestrianised town centre.
