TASK 1 (Table): Wildlife survey outcomes
The table below shows the number of people who participated in a wildlife survey in Britain from 2001 to 2009.
Sample Answer
The provided table illustrates the outcomes of a particular wildlife survey conducted in Britain between 2001 and 2009, highlighting key trends across two distinct demographics, alongside the totals.
What is immediately striking upon observing the data is a precipitous rise in the number of total respondents, likely as a result of the exponential growth of both examined brackets. Equally noteworthy is the numerical superiority of adults during the majority of the studied timeframe, with the exception of the final year, which, interestingly, recorded an identical number of survey participants in both cohorts.
Total participants, first and foremost, exhibited a conspicuous upward trajectory. Commencing at 48,000 respondents in 2001, the total figure saw a fivefold increase within the following two years, reaching 248,000 people, followed by a substantial rise of more than 100,000 to reach a peak figure of 364,000 in 2005. Despite such a meteoric rise, a modest drop of 2,000 was seen in 2007, before a nearly twofold surge culminated the period at 540,000 – reflecting a more than tenfold cumulative expansion.
This pronounced increase was reflected in the rises, albeit to varying magnitudes, of the adult and children populations. Adults started the period registering 36,000 survey participants, triple the corresponding number of children, which stood at 12,000 people. Notwithstanding similar upward patterns, their individual dynamics differed drastically. A meteoric rise was seen right from the early years within the adult segment, characterised by its 2001 figure more than quintupling to 212,000 in 2003, which preceded another marked successive increase to peak at 332,000 in 2005. This high was then followed by a marginal dip to 331,000 in 2007, thereby mirroring the upward trend of the total.
Children, however, recorded a more moderate growth rate and also began from a far lower base. An early peak was seen in 2003 at 36,000, before easing back moderately to 31,000 in 2007. Interestingly, both age groups culminated at 270,000, marking a final decline of around 60,000 for adults but a nearly tenfold increase for children. A closer inspection shows adults rising by nearly tenfold, compared to a more than twentyfold increase in children overall.
