The table provides statistics on independent films released in the UK and Republic of Ireland in 2012, categorized by genre.

Overall, drama and documentary were the most common genres, followed by comedy and, distantly, horror and thriller. Conversely, biopic, action, romance, crime, and other genres had the smallest number of releases. In addition, the majority of income from tickets comes from comedy and horror.

Despite being the most popular genres, drama and documentary (both accounting for 23.6% of all releases) had relatively low revenue from ticket sales (8.3% and 2.9%, respectively), while comedy generated the highest box office sales (45.4%) despite a moderate 17.6% of all releases. Among the leading genres, drama and documentary had 35 releases each, followed by 26 releases of comedy.

Horror and thriller were comparable at around 14 releases, each constituting around 9% of all releases, with horror generating 20.2% of revenue from ticket sales and thriller only 1.3%. Biopic, action, crime, romance, and other genres had less than 10 releases each and generated insignificant incomes from ticket sales (most less than 5%).

CONTRAST

“Conversely, biopic, action, romance, crime, and other genres had the smallest number of releases.”

Here I used the word “conversely” to show a contrast between the most common genres and the genres with the smallest number of releases. This structure is useful for IELTS learners to master as it helps them connect two contrasting ideas in a sentence and make their writing more coherent.
