TASK 1 (Bar charts): CAR TRIPS
Sample Answer
The provided bar chart illustrates the number of road trips alongside five different purposes conducted by men and women on a daily basis in a particular European city.
What is immediately striking upon observing the depiction is the male-skewed pattern observed among those travelling on daily journeys, engaging in sporting or recreational pursuits, and commuting for professional purposes, with the most pronounced gender disparity exhibited by those commuting to work. This therefore leaves aside the higher female commuting levels within friend visitation and shopping. Equally noteworthy is that most men commuted to work by car, while a similar observation can be said for women who travelled for retail purposes.
Professional commutes and retail travels were sectors with the widest gender discrepancy regarding road trips. Around 325 men went to work by private automobiles – the highest figure in the chart – far surpassing the corresponding number for females, which stood at over 200 people annually. However, a completely different picture with reversed order occurred among those travelling by car to go shopping, in which approximately 275 women reportedly fell into this category – the largest figure within the female demographic. By comparison, men trailed substantially behind, recording only around 185 shoppers – even less than the figure for women who travelled to work by car.
The remaining sectors demonstrated a largely similar gender gap, yet their inherent natures are rather different from one another. Car commuters who visited friends were in favour of females, exemplified in roughly 220 women, marginally outnumbering the figure for their male counterparts (less than 200). By contrast, sports/entertainment and day travel were male-skewed. Fewer than 150 men travelled by car to partake in recreational pursuits – half the figure for those commuting to work. By comparison, women in the sports/entertainment criterion accounted for around 130 people – half that of shopping. Lastly, day trip was the least prevalent examined purpose, with both genders converging at around 25 people each, though men continued to marginally outpace their female counterparts.
