TASK 2 (Agree or Disagree): CULTURAL LEARNING
It is not necessary to travel to other places to learn the culture of other people. We can learn just as much from books, films, and the Internet. Do you agree or disagree?
Sample Answer
Many believe that in order to learn about other cultures, one does not necessarily have to travel to these specific regions, since this knowledge can be readily accessed through multi-media sources such as books, movies, and the Internet. While acknowledging the valid reasoning behind this thinking, I do not share this viewpoint.
Proponents of remote cultural learning highlight the utility of mainstream and modern media in knowledge acquisition. From their perspective, books can offer curated cultural accounts, films tend to be culturally relevant for the mass audience, and the Internet caters to on-demand cultural enquiries. Examples of mastery in a specific culture without physical visits abound, among which are foreign tourists passionate about the Vietnamese ways of life. Through consistently reading books about Vietnam, watching movies such as Mưa đỏ, and tuning into online travel vlogs, these cultural enthusiasts have already managed to understand the bulk of Vietnamese culture before their very first visit.
However, this reasoning fails to factor in the nature of published media in the cultural landscape. Indeed, while books and films tend to present highly curated and relevant cultural references for the sake of sales and box office revenue, the Internet is likely to contain a great deal of misinformation, cultural biases, and taboos stemming from user-contributed information. These shortcomings can distort cultural perception, thereby undermining genuine cultural learning.
In light of this counter-argument, an argument in favour of cultural tourism is further reinforced by the immersive experiences exclusively acquired through physically visiting the places. Specifically, only through visiting Vietnam can tourists have the opportunity to sample locally made Pho – whose taste can be radically different from that in their hometown or other parts of the world. Cuisine aside, if one has not lived among British people, he or she may not feel the subtle variations in the way the English speak their language, project their manners, and conduct themselves socially. Last but not least, only by visiting the actual place can one participate in local festivals and traditional events, such as Ramadan or Tet holiday – cultural aspects that cannot be replicated through reading books, watching movies, and using the Internet.
In conclusion, while there are legitimate arguments underpinning the use of books, films, and the Internet to learn about culture, these channels pale in comparison to physical visits, which can provide visitors with a unique and immersive taste of cultures. Ideally, one needs to combine both methods for the most comprehensive cultural appreciation.
