TASK 2 (Discuss both views): PUBLIC NUTRITION

It is argued that public health would be greatly improved if the government made laws concerning the public’s nutrition and food choices. Others argue that it is a matter of personal choice and personal responsibility. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Whether deliberate state intervention or individual accountability constitutes the optimal measure for promoting public health has been a topic of contentious debate. While some contend that government-mandated policies concerning healthy dieting regimens can resolve existing public health crises, others concede that the average person should be held accountable for their choices regarding nutrition and exercising. This essay will discuss both perspectives before stating my final stance on this contention.

Proponents of government interference in the domain of personal eating habits rightly argue in favour of a sweeping reform. State authorities – armed with vast resources, regulatory authority, and structured legislative frameworks – these supporters believe, can enact policies to shape public gastronomical behaviour, disincentivise unhealthy habits, and discourage wanton food consumption. Salient examples of state authority can range from lenient to more draconian regulations, such as levying taxes on processed food and alcoholic beverages, prohibiting genetically modified foodstuffs, or severely penalising producers that fail to satisfy hygienic standards. Such restrictions can also be implemented in tandem with promoting the adoption of salubrious diets and the consumption of organic food options. These policies can manifest in the form of nutrition awareness programmes often demonstrated in educational institutions, which are believed to yield far-reaching impacts compared to the otherwise inconsistent, intermittent efforts of ordinary people.

On the other end of the spectrum, those heralding individual autonomy claim that people should take matters into their own hands as far as personal health is concerned. These pro-individual rights argue that state restrictions, whether lenient or harsh, can constitute an infringement upon autonomy, especially when it comes to private matters such as personal dieting and fitness regimes. Consequently, unnecessary tax hikes, food disincentives, or blanket bans may undermine the very fundamental principles of democratic societies, potentially engendering resentment, exacerbating public dissatisfaction, and even destabilising leadership. Advocates of personal accountability may also highlight the profound disparity in dieting routines among people, which is contingent on numerous factors such as culture, religion, and individual preference. For instance, banning fast food options with the aim of promoting a plant-based diet may stir dissatisfaction among Western communities, whose diets consist mostly of processed food items.

Upon weighing both viewpoints, while governments can impose all-encompassing laws, backed by abundant resources and regulatory oversight, to bring about improved public health, such a mandate can raise human rights concerns, since individuals may drastically differ based on social, cultural, and religious factors. Ideally, the key lies in a concerted effort, wherein governments and citizens work in tandem with the aim of promoting sustainable improvement in public health. While the state can abstain from strict mandates and emphasise educational awareness campaigns, the average person should take the initiative to conduct research regarding healthy dieting and adopt a constructive lifestyle.
