TASK 2 (Agree or Disagree): Celebrities

In some countries, celebrities complain about the way the media publicize their private lives. Some people say that they should accept it as part of their fame. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer

In numerous countries worldwide, there have been complaints filed by celebrated individuals regarding the media exposure of their private lives. In stark opposition to this, there are those who contend that individuals should embrace this lifestyle as much as they can, as publicity is inherently an indispensable part of the fame package. I also hold the latter viewpoint while acknowledging the valid reasoning underpinning celebrity privacy protection.

Advocates of shielding famous individuals from outright media intrusion may rightly cite human rights concerns as their groundings. The fact that the media have blatantly exploited numerous aspects of celebrities’ private encounters for attention or commercial gains, these supporters argue, may completely manifest as an infringement upon individual autonomy. Barring moments with full consent, there are instances from celebrities’ daily encounters exploited by media channels that are fraught with pitfalls, vulnerabilities, and embarrassment, which can potentially tarnish their long-cultivated image. Those heralding celebrity rights also raise the valid concerns that since renowned people are simply humans after all, they deserve to have their privacy safeguarded against public curiosity. Failing to uphold this principle, they say, would go against the fundamental tenet of democratic and pluralistic societies, which can in turn give way to public resentment and social destabilisation.

Be that as it may, celebrities are fundamentally different from ordinary people, rendering the aforementioned pro-democracy argument far from fully grounded. Admittedly, severe privacy invasion should by no means be normalised; yet, most acclaimed and renowned individuals have rightfully achieved their fame and attention mainly from popular support, meaning that they should, to some degree, accept that compromised privacy constitutes a sizeable proportion of the fame package. Indeed, to be in the public eye already means to cultivate at least a socially acceptable image, characterised by visually striking presences, rational behaviours, and good moral etiquettes. It goes without saying that their lives should reflect the gravity of this package, and that media, to some extent, has the rights to exploit these to promote them as role models. Plus, most celebrities nowadays have managed to use various multimedia platforms to promote and strengthen their fame. A case in point is the Kardashians, who exploit various aspects of their private lives to gain substantial followers and a firm standing in the entertainment industry. In conclusion, while there are valid human rights groundings to back complaints from celebrities regarding media exposure, I would argue that this is an essential trade-off for fame that should be willingly embraced by famous people. Furthermore, since celebrities use media to gain fame, privacy exposure should, to a degree, be normalised given the current entertainment landscape.
