TASK 2 (Two Parts): Limited working hours

Some countries have introduced laws to limit working hours for employees. Why are these laws introduced? Do you think they are a positive or negative development?

Sample Answer

It is evident that numerous countries worldwide have enacted legislative frameworks to place a limit on the official business hours for the working population. This legal enactment can be attributable to a diversity of causes, and is, from my perspective, a welcome development, regardless of potential short-term limitations.

At the heart of this imposed regulation lies legitimate concerns for employee welfare. Proponents of this reform argue fervently that extended working periods, regardless of profession or trade, can exert detrimental physical implications on the average worker. Salient examples of typical occurrences include deteriorating eyesight, distorted posture, and even digestive issues for white-collar employees; as for their blue-collar counterparts, these physiological worries can manifest in the form of occupational hazards, spinal injuries, or falling from height due to physical fatigue and exhaustion. To make matters worse, mental tiredness owing to prolonged hours can demoralise workers and erode passion, potentially resulting in lowered productivity and increased turnover rates.

Opponents of such an in-place proposal also cite potential losses for businesses in addition to personal fatigue. From their perspective, the conventional practice revolving around extended hours, extra shifts, and comparatively limited rest periods may incur substantial costs, such as heightened utility bills, workplace-related risks, and ironically, lowered productivity. Contrary to popular belief, not only does overworking usually not generate higher economic outcomes, but it can also jeopardise efficiency, exacerbating existing issues at work.

For these aforementioned causes, the implemented laws have been put into practice; however, such a legislative rule can amount to potential shortcomings in the short term. Once these are in place, companies, factories, and supply chains can experience a temporary decline of production outcomes due to reduced inputs in terms of total manpower. This issue, nevertheless, can be rectified by the steady adoption of high-yield technologies, AI-powered production systems, and innovative management styles, thereby potentially offsetting any immediate setbacks. In the long run, this proposed policy can bring about enhanced employee welfare, improved mental health, and elevated job satisfaction, as widely reported in companies across numerous industries, such as Apple, Tesla, and Microsoft, wherein employees have reportedly achieved a greater work-life balance following reformation in terms of working hours. Additionally, curtailing working hours can also boost consumerism by allowing individuals idle, non-work periods to enhance their quality of life. These spared hours can otherwise be used in supporting sales for various brands, thus incentivising consumerist culture and driving economic growth more broadly.

In conclusion, the laws implemented to restrict working hours can stem from valid concerns related to worker wellbeing and business profitability. Notwithstanding instantaneous drawbacks related to temporary dwindled productivity, this can be resolved through the adoption of technologies and management revolution. When all is said and done, the benefits of this shift are not limited to individual health and wellbeing but extend towards socio-economic growth, boosting consumerism and sustainable economic growth.
