Some believe technology has made our lives too complex and the solution is to lead a simpler life without technology. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Sample Answer
A school of thought holds that technological advancements have greatly complicated our lives as users, prompting many to contend that a viable solution regarding decomplication involves the adoption of a simple lifestyle absent of technological usage. While acknowledging the reasoning behind this thinking, I do not hold this viewpoint and will present superior measures to integrate rather than abandon technology.
Admittedly, detractors of technological breakthroughs cite legitimate instances of tech-driven applications afflicting their users to a point of no return. In this increasingly digitalised world, there are notable examples of social media sites exerting physical and mental tolls on their users, advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications exacerbating a sense of technological dependency, or short-form video platforms diminishing public attention span, among others. Having suffered these tangible drawbacks, many technology users may feel that their lives have become far more complex than they should be, which gives rise to the thought of discounting technology and its concomitant derivatives altogether. However, foregoing this advancement is, in other words, to address the symptoms rather than the disease. Indeed, to abandon all tech applications only to lead a simpler life means implicitly refusing all merits associated with technology, such as increased interpersonal connection, improved productivity, enhanced decision-making capacity, and unprecedented efficiency, to name a few.
To reinforce my argument, I would argue that ‘too complex’ is an over-exaggeration, and although life has become less simple than it used to be, there are plausible solutions to cohabit with technology rather than complete abandonment. From an individual standpoint, the average person should, first and foremost, strive to strike a balance between technological usage and individual proactiveness in terms of problem-solving, daily interaction, personal issues, and professional endeavours. Challenging as it may seem, a clear line in the sand would reduce over-reliance and ameliorate the psychological toll exerted by technological platforms. To complement this, institutions should regulate, to a certain degree, the use of technology in educational and professional environments. While schools can restrict the use of AI platforms to prevent plagiarism, for instance, companies may incentivise authentic creativity by limiting computer-aided design software. Lastly, nowhere other than among governmental authorities should a comprehensive approach be implemented. Governments, with their vast resources, regulatory authority, and legislative framework, can organise technological awareness campaigns to promote computer and AI literacy, thereby preventing technological burnout and promoting personal well-being.
In conclusion, while there are legitimate reasons to let go of technology and embrace a simpler lifestyle, this proposal is synonymous with disregarding all the merits of technology, which is backward thinking and regressive. Rather, a concerted effort of governments, institutions, and individuals can engender all-encompassing changes, bringing about a sustainable future with technology becoming an indispensable part. Only by integrating technology can we thrive as humankind and will society flourish.
