Writing Task 2

Rubbish

Nowadays, we are producing more and more rubbish.

Why do you think this is happening?

What can governments do to help reduce the amount of rubbish produced?

In recent years, more and more garbage has been produced. This essay will discuss consumerism and online shopping as major reasons for this escalation, and present remedies to rectify this issue.

There are two main causes for the increasing amount of rubbish in many countries. The primary cause is consumerism. Manufacturers keep producing retail products at an alarming rate, and consumers also develop the concomitant habit of replacing items frequently, leading to the accumulation of rubbish in landfills more than ever before. Another compelling reason is that more people have to resort to online shopping or home delivery services to sustain the current fast-paced lifestyle. More specifically, many families shop online for food, clothes, and electronics, which produces more daily domestic waste due to increased packaging.

Nonetheless, there are workable solutions to mitigate the impact of the increasing amount of garbage around the world. The first solution is that policymakers should enact laws to incentivize factories and companies to adopt environmentally friendly habits. Stricter penalties should be applied for cases of over-packaging and the massive use of disposables in the manufacturing and distribution procedures. An additional measure is that the government should raise the public’s awareness of green living. For example, if the general public is encouraged to use more recyclables, more household items can be reused for future purchases, contributing to a greener living style with fewer disposables.

In conclusion, the two underlying reasons for growing rubbish are consumerism and online purchases. Therefore, the relevant solutions are adopting eco-friendly habits and encouraging green living for both businesses and the general public.
