TASK 2 (Agree or Disagree): Relocation

In many countries, people have to move away from their family and friends to work. Will the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Sample Answer

In numerous countries globally, there has been a notable shift towards work-induced departures from one’s family and friends. From my perspective, the drawbacks of this growing societal phenomenon substantially surpass its perceived benefits.

Forced relocation from one’s family members and acquaintances may confer substantial personal and professional merits. Embarking on a journey away from family and friends, though difficult a choice it can be, can open up countless opportunities for those who are willing to make such compromising decisions, especially those in impoverished regions, marginalised communities, or rural areas. In stark contrast to people endowed with privileges and riches, those from more humble beginnings may only resort to leaving for more metropolitan hubs to seek employment opportunities, alongside attractive promotion prospects and remuneration packages, to better the standards of living for themselves and their dependents. Added to this can be the avoidance of potentially toxic relationships that have long been endured since childhood. In such circumstances, relocation is not merely a choice, it is also an escape, with the aim of improved physical and mental well-being of the deciders.

While I acknowledge such benefits, they fail to factor in more serious, far-reaching psychological and socio-economic repercussions. It is undeniable that one’s family, relatives, and acquaintances tend to act as safety nets, serving as a backbone for success and safeguarding them against mental health issues. A move away from such pillars of support, especially when it becomes permanent, may take an irreversible toll on one’s health, exacerbating loneliness, a sense of emotional abandonment, and estrangement. To make matters worse, this rising phenomenon is not limited to damaging one’s mental psyche. If a community experiences steady cases of such relocation, this can lead to a brain drain phenomenon and a dearth of human resources, weakening its resilience and eroding the sense of community cohesion. In the aggregate, if rural or vulnerable communities witness constant departures, this can widen the wealth disparity between regions, since while urban areas keep receiving immigrants, others lose their precious manpower.

In conclusion, while there are notable advantages pertaining to intended relocation, mainly personal and professional, these can be outweighed by the injurious implications related to weakened psychological health, diluted community cohesion, and exacerbated wealth disparity, making this phenomenon a negative development overall.
