TASK 2 (Positive or Negative): Food Imports

Some countries import a large amount of food from other parts of the world. To what extent is this a positive or negative trend?

Sample Answer

In today’s globalised world, numerous countries have been reported to import substantial amounts of produce from other regions. This essay will discuss both the benefits and drawbacks of this rising phenomenon before stating why I believe this shift is an overwhelming positive one, provided that the demerits are properly resolved.

Detractors of foreign food imports argue against this development on both economic and environmental grounds. Economically, these opponents contend that substantial foreign imports in terms of meat, poultry, and other farming produce can serve as a disincentive to domestic production. In response to import policies, farmers and local growers may be demotivated to enhance their agricultural productivity, promote diversity of produce, and achieve quality outcomes since imported foodstuffs can be of far-ranging varieties and offer competitive prices, thereby eroding the long-standing position of locally produced offerings. However, the influx of international imports, despite a temporary setback in local production, can bring long-term benefits as this economic shift is likely to dilute market monopolisation and compel local producers to innovate lest they be marginalised competitively.

Another worry of this transition from domestically sourced to foreign imported food products, according to naysayers, is the environmental toll potentially stemming from food miles. From their perspective, the long commute associated with logistical endeavours can result in significant carbon footprints, worsening air quality, exacerbating climate change, and weakening fragile ecosystems. Valid as a concern as it might seem, such environmentalism-grounded worries can be effectively addressed by the gradual adoption of green technologies in transportation and sustainable logistical frameworks.

To fortify my argument, the benefits of imports are far-reaching and enduring. Psychologically speaking, this notable shift plays a pivotal role in fulfilling consumer psychology since most buyers are predisposed to a sense of novelty – a phenomenon that is palpable across many facets of life. Having sampled locally grown produce for extended periods, it is natural for consumers to venture into tropical fruits, exotic seafood, and mountainous beverages for a change. Furthermore, foreign imports prove absolutely necessary in places with unfavourable climatic conditions, natural calamities, and humanitarian crises. Imagine how grateful residents in war zones, arid regions, or lockdown areas can be if they are entitled to import access.

In conclusion, while I acknowledge the valid drawbacks of this shift regarding social and ecological grounds, the pros in terms of monopolisation elimination, altered consumer psychology, and crisis resolution make it a welcome phenomenon overall, provided that it is judiciously regulated.
