Writing Task 1

TASK 1 (BAR CHARTS): URBAN POPULATION GROWTH

The chart below gives information about the growth of the urban population in certain parts of the world including the prediction of the future. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Sample Answer

The provided bar chart displays information about the rates of urban population growth in three different parts of the world compared with the whole world percentages, alongside future projections.

What is the most striking from the data is that all studied regions and the world as a whole saw increases in their city population figures, which are projected to maintain upward trends by the end of the period. It is also important to note that Latin America is the only area experiencing higher growth rates than that of their whole world counterpart in all surveyed years and a predicted one, and the former also most closely resembles the pattern exhibited by the latter.

Looking first at areas with lower percentages than those of the entire globe, Africa and Asia recorded the urban population growth rates of around 12% in 1950, with the latter slightly outranking the former. At this point, both numbers were significantly lower than the statistic for the globe as a whole. By 2000, however, the figures for both continents had roughly tripled, with both reaching just below 40%, thereby narrowing the gap between their percentages and that for the whole world. As the rising trend is expected to continue, 2030 is likely to see sustained rises in both continents, reaching 50% for Africa and a slightly higher 55% for Asia, although these will still be lower than the predicted one for the whole world.

Moving on to Latin America, this region saw a figure higher than that of its whole world counterpart in 1950, numbering just over 40%, after which it almost doubled to 70% in 2000, which was notably the largest increase between 1950 and 2000. It is also noteworthy that the whole world commenced the period at 10% lower; however, its proportion rose markedly by a largely similar extent to less than 50% in 2000. By 2030, both Latin America and the whole world are predicted to rise by a similar margin of around 5%, reaching 80% and 60% respectively.
