Writing Task 1

TASK 1 (Maps): Biomedical Campus

Sample Answer:

The provided graphics illustrate the current layout of a university’s biomedical campus, juxtaposed against its planned redevelopment.

From an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the campus is expected to undergo a dramatic transformation geared towards increased accessibility, more comprehensive research facilities, and functional specialisation; however, these planned developments will largely be at the expense of existing greenery. Notably, the main features, such as the road, car park, lab, and genetics laboratory, will remain largely unchanged; nonetheless, these will likely see repositioning, reorganisation, and the addition of similar facilities.

The current spatial configuration of the campus highlights a horizontal, L-shaped central road, with a walkway branching off to the lower-most region. While the upper section is presently occupied by a car park in the top-right corner and a forestry area offering some greenery, the lower zone, equally divided into two distinct parts, features mainly biomedical facilities. In detail, the bottom-left zone houses a lab, a limited green area, and a biochemistry facility, whereas the bottom-right one is equipped with specialised areas dedicated to genetics and biotech, alongside another laboratory.

The planned reconfiguration demonstrates a marked shift in facility organisation and infrastructure arrangement. A detailed breakdown delineates the relocation and upgrades of the central road, which is planned to occupy the far left and lower-most edges of the future campus, with the walkway remaining at the same location but undergoing noticeable expansion. On the bottom-left corner, a newly developed staff car park is added, indicative of increased demands for staff parking. The top section is anticipated to house the Genetics-1 facility, a newly added bio-imaging area, with the original car park being untouched, regardless of the predicted wave of development. In the lower section, the lab and the biochemistry facility on the left are likely to be unaltered despite potential reshaping, while the right side is expected to contain the genetics (renamed Genetics 2), lab, and biotech facility (which will be upgraded to be a double facility).
