TASK 1 (Bar charts): Urban population
Sample Answer:
The provided graphic illustrates demographic statistics regarding the urban populations in five distinct continents, juxtaposed against the average world population during the predicted period from 1950 to 2030.
What is immediately striking upon observing the data is a shared upward trajectory projected by all examined parts of the world, which was reflected and will likely be exhibited in the rising pattern of the average global proportions. Equally noteworthy is the predicted consistent dominance of North America, which stood in stark opposition to Africa, which is forecast to remain the least prevalent in terms of city resident population.
The global urban demographic is expected to undergo a steady upward trend, starting at 29% of survey respondents being urban inhabitants, rising by 20% by 2007, and continuing this upward momentum to reach an estimated 60% in 2030. The aforementioned increasing pattern is characterised by a 1950–2007 dramatic surge, followed by more moderate growth in the later half of the period. This ascending trend can also be replicated among all other continents. Among these, Africa and Asia showed both comparable figures and the most substantial rises. Commencing the period averaging around 16% of rural dwellers, the proportions of city residents in these countries more than doubled to 37% for Africa and 41% for Asia in 2007. From this point onwards, projected percentages show more than half of these continents’ populations residing in urban centres in 2030, with figures standing at 51% and 54% for the former and the latter, respectively.
Among the remaining continents, Latin America and the Caribbean demonstrated the most pronounced increase, with their share of urban population doubling from 42% in 1950 to an anticipated 84% by the end of the projected timeline. Meanwhile, a similar pattern is observed between Europe and North America, though the former witnessed a more substantial rise in the initial half of the period, growing from 51% to 72%. The latter, nonetheless, increased to a lesser extent, climbing by 15% during the same timeframe. Despite this, projected increases show a more significant disparity, characterised by an 8% increase from North America (79% to 87%), while Europe only rose by 6% (72% to 78%).
